It was late at night and my husband was tired, he had woken up early for work. He has going to take a nap so we both pulled out our iPods, so he's have music to sleep to and so I wouldn't get bored with no one to talk to. We don't usually listen to music when we travel together, just when we wants to sleep or when I need some space (I don't like crowds 0.o) So this guy yells "look at the hippies with their precious technology!" He leaves the subway, but hits the subway window on his way out.

I was really upset and shaken at first. I love my iPod, but not the point that I don't talk to people. I make an effort to be social, even though I find it difficult.

At first the thought of hippies and technology confused me. When I think of hippies I think of people living off the land in communes. But then I realized that I spin, weave, knit and crochet. I make my own clothes and mod clothes as well. But I'm also a huge geek. So I decided to claim the title of techno hippie and make it a positive thing.

I think I think too much.

-----------------------------

Cross posted from Tiner Me Diary

Tinier Me

I know, it's been awhile. I'm trying this, again, for the 50 millionth time. :/

I love casual gaming. I really love browser based casual games as they tend to actually work on my computers. I'm not running windows on either of my machines now and I don't like to have to steal Shaggy's computer for games. I've just started playing a game called Tinier Me. It's kinda like Gaia Online but newer so it's not so crowded. It's not got as much in the way of features but people seem friendly, if not young (not that you see everyone's age. I'm going based on writing style alone on most people.) I thought the amount of young people would bug me, but since I started school last fall it doesn't seem to matter much anymore. I can pass for 18 apparently. (It's the blue hair, I swear it is!)

On of the features of this site is that you get in game currency for making a diary entry. I made a new years resolution to journal more on and off line. I really want to succed at this as it is something that I find brings balance to my life when I take the time to do it. Strangly it would seem that in game currency is the carrot I need to get writing more. Yeah, I know, it's sad, but I guess it doesn't matter if it works.

I'll try to cross post most of it so you dont have to join the game to read, oh faithful readers. But I think some of you would get a kick out of the game. If you decide to play friend me. I'm Sabriel Moonstar over there, like always. :P

I'm still alive! But I am still alive, really I am. I'm just not the most timely blogger.

I think that if I had started off with a different blog format, a more Mac friendly blog format I'd have stuck to it more. Blogger doesn't play nice with Safari, and I'd rather not change browsers just for one page (not that Firefox isn't a nice browser. I just prefer Safari.)

I also find the Blogger web editor really annoying to use. It takes forever to do anything even on the fastest of computers. And well I'm not always the most patient of people, especially when it comes to technology.

I have the feeling that if Mobile Me and iWeb were around when I started my blog I'd have blogged more often. But they weren't and I really don't want to move, lest I lose the few readers I have. That and Blogger is really easy for other apps and sites to access.

I love cloud computing. But I love it more when I have nice desktop apps to access the cloud. Mobile Me syncs with my Mail, Address Book, iCal & iPhoto. My notes live in Evernote (I *heart* Evernote. It's like my brain is stored on a web server somewhere!) If I am to use something often it has to live on my dock or it's not gonna happen! I'm just to disorganized to function any other way!

So I am trying a new desktop client for blogging. It's called Flock and it's more like what would happen if a web browser mated with a feed reader. It's yet another Mozilla based web browser, billing itself as a "social web browser". You can keep track of a variety of web based apps like Facebook, Twitter, G-mail and the like (not that I use 90% of the apps it keeps track of, but it's nice to have options.)

It's still a web browser, and that kinda annoys me. I still want to do my browsing in Safari but I think this will be a good way to keep web apps and what I am currently reading on the web seperate. I'll mainly be using this program for blogging though so if it sucks at the it'll get the axe. (I am trying to keep the amount of apps on my mac to a minimum) So we'll wait and see.

I'm gonna try to post some stuff to bring the blog up to speed about where I have been for the last 9 months. So keep an eye out for that! :D

Blogged with the Flock Browser

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://beautiful.sorceressandswordsman.com/2009/03/i-still-alive-really-i-am.html' title='I'm still alive! Waited for Shaggy to get home, got all dressed up and go downstairs to buy a day pass only to find the TTC is on strike. The Frolic was being held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (where we used to take Japanese Lessons) Which is very very far away from my apartment.

Now had the TTC given 48 hours notice like they promised or even 24 hours so it could have made that papers, Shaggy and I could have figured out a way there and back. (We don't watch the news. Shaggy gets the paper at work and I get it if I go out that day.) But they gave a 1/2 hour notice. They walked out at midnight, stranding hundreds of people. Let's just say I'm the only one who's not pleased. I actually sort of felt bad for some of the workers (some are just plain rude) I really don't feel so bad for them now. That wasn't a very nice way to do things. They claimed they didn't give 48 hours notice because the last time they did people were angry with them. I think the "better way" is going to be the "cranky and irate" way tomorrow. I usually go to Riverdale Farm to sit and spin with some of the ladies from the guild (and a few non guild members) I might not go if people are really bad.

Anyway, I still wanted to go to the Frolic. It's only once a year and there were a lot of vendors coming from out of town. I don't mind mail order, but it's easier when you can get an idea of what they sell. It can be pretty hit and miss on the net. I have gotten some lovely roving, but I always like to feel it first.

And you all know how stubborn I am ...

So Shaggy and I hopped on our bikes and biked/walked (especially with the hills around here) to the Frolic. We were on our bikes all day. We left at 11 am and got back at 9:30 pm! It was a 45 km round trip!

We biked most of the way there, only walking up steep hills, from Etobicoke to the JCCC. It took about 4 hours with a stop for lunch at the Caldense Bakery (Very good deserts. They have very yummy cake!) We took a bike path on Eglinton Ave most of the way.

I was tired, bit it was worth it. We got there an hour before they closed. I wish I could have spent more time looking at everything and talking with people. There were a lot of vendors with a lot of very nice things. Shaggy looked at the wheels (he still wants to build one) and I focused on spinning supplies (though there was quite a bit of wonderful looking yarn.) I was kinda in a daze for the first 15 minutes. My legs were not at all happy with the bike ride.

I did do quite a bit of shopping in that short time.

Blue Faced Leicester Dyed Pink and Undyed Soy Silk from The Black Lamb

Citrus Soak (and bonus care label) from the Soak Stand

A 1 1/2 oz Folklore Fiberarts Spindle from the Purple Purl

A set of Ashford wool handcarders from Gemini Fibers (unassembled. (I got the light blue, he picked out the purple) so the lady gave him one too. Taking Shaggy to a fiber event/store is kinda like taking a child along. He gets bored easy and the shop keepers spoil him sometimes. ;)

He's a little too spoiled it seems. He deemed the little calendar from Gemini and the free care label from Soak unsuitable freebies. Though the free tote and bits of roving from the Purple Purl seemed acceptable to him. He says he's going to spin up the purple, but we'll see if that happens. I'm probably going to keep those bits for needle felting. I might save the baggies from the Black Lamb to spin some lace weight someday.

I had a good time and hope to be back next year. If I can find transportation that is.

The ride back was more grueling. We stopped early on of dinner (and a daiquiri) at Swiss Chalet. There were more people walking about in the evening at a slower pace on the sidewalk and I didn't feel confident enough to bike on the street so we walked our bikes most of the way out of downtown. The we biked a fair bit (downhill) after Blackcreek Road and I biked almost all of the last leg down East Mall.

Of course I have been very very sore since then. Beyond just tired. My legs don't want to bend much and my butt hurts so I can only sit on soft things. Hopefully another nights rest helps.

Of course by now the TTC is back and running after being legislated back to work (on a Sunday no less) I'm still miffed though. Makes me want to go out and get a mo-ped or something.

We've been cat sitting Shaggy's parent's cats since January. They went home today. :( They were the sweetest polydactyl father son pair. The son was blind, but sweet as pie. The place will be quieter without them around, though Shampoo and Ukyou didn't like them too much so they will be happy. On the upside, I now have a bread maker. I traded it for my crock pot as my MIL's crockpot kinda died after they left it on our balcony. Shaggy promised me a new bigger one as I only really use it to dye yarn and it would be easier with a bigger one.

Have you any wool?

I know it's been too long since I updated when I have to read my last blog post to see where I left off. ;)

March and April have been very busy months indeed. I knew March would be busy. My sister came to visit during March Break so between getting the place ready, getting caught up at work in hopes that I wouldn't have to work during her visit (which unfortunately didn't work and I had to spend a bit of time in the den during her visit.) and of course the visit itself.

All in all though, it was a nice visit. She was an awesome house guest. We did way too much shopping (Is that possible?) and she got her hair done at the salon. It would seem testing the limits of what hair dye can do runs in the family.

The grand finale of the trip was the Toronto AnimeCon (not to be confused with Anime North) The con was a bit of a disappointment. It was way smaller then Anime North, there were no real deals to be had (and any that were to be had were canceled out by the $15 you had to pay to get in the door.) But we still had a good time.

We all cosplayed this time. Shaggy went as a Jedi like always, I went as Aerith Gainsborough from FFVII : Crisis Core and my sister went as Near from Death Note (and got Shaggy hooked on Death Note in the process.)

Of course what's cosplay without pictures:

I've also been really busy with my spinning, knitting and crocheting. I got some new equipment. I needed a lighter spindle. But I didn't read the item description properly and got a much lighter spindle then expected. It's a pretty spindle, but I need to practice with something a bit heavier first before I can use this spindle:

It's a .6 oz Rose Quartz Butterfly Girl Designs Spindle from Spunky Eclectic.

I also got a wheel :) I finally found a used wheel in my price range (wheels can be quite pricey!) Shaggy helped me bring it home on the subway as it's quite heavy. It's a really old Louet S10:

And here's my first yarn on the bobbin:

And here's that yarn all plied up and dyed:

1/2 pound and 190 yards of Grey Coopworth wool, dyed with Grape, Strawberry and Changin' Cherry Kool-aid. I'm knitting it into a purse at the moment. It's knitting up nicely. There are a few over spun and under spun spots, but hey it was my first wheel spun yarn.

Of course I spun a bit of yarn on my spindle before I found the wheel.

1/4 pound 82 yards White Coopworth wool, dyed with green & blues Easter egg dye

45 Yards of Faux Cashmere & Alpaca dyed with Icing Dye

I also spun up more yarn on the wheel. The wheel is much faster then any of my spindles. I like to spin while watching Star Trek in the evenings. Especially if I have seen the episode before (Shaggy hasn't seen a lot of them. And I like watching them again anyway.) I was able to spin my second skein in less then a week. I needed to get it done for Guild Day. I bought the wool a week before guild day and it was spun and dry in time for me to go.

1/2 pound , 177 Yards of Blue Faced Leicester dyed with Acid Dyes

I dyed the skien during the guild day dyeing work shop. I also tried my hand at needle felting. We made pendant necklaces. I really enjoyed the needle felting and picked up some supplies to have on hand. It's a nice way to use up little bits and pieces of roving.

Wow, that was one super long post. But now I'm up to date and can stop procrastinating about updating. At least until I get behind again. :)

Happy Valentine's Day

I hope everyone had a Happy Valentine's Day. Shaggy loved his dragon & Toberlone gift (I call it the Hobo Dragon, what with his cardboard sign.) Shaggy gave me the most beautiful pink, purple and white bouquet of flowers. :)

We did a bit of shopping today. It's hard to tell when it's in a plastic bag. I think next time I'll pay the extra $2 a pound for the Coopworth like I did last week (in bit's right now being dyed as I type) Oh well, it spins well at least. I'm gonna see if it gets softer with some wool wash or something.

The mohair/merino/nylon yarn is drying too. It's plied, set and ready to dye. I only got 50 yards out of it though 0.o I'm waiting for some more roving to arrive in the mail. I'm gonna ply that with the Coopworth and use both yarns to make a stripy scarf.

We then went on to the Eaton Centre and found some beautiful tins for $1 each! I would have bought the whole lot of them, but I don't think Shaggy wants 10 plaid tins about the apartment (He hates plaid >.<) so I only got two. I'm going to use them to store crafty things or even just to store the small strips of roving I spin from.

I finally found a copy of Katamari Damacy. Shaggy thought it was interesting. He's actually better at it them I am, but I'm sure I'll get better with practice.

I *heart* my new drop spindle

After a few attempts at finding a decently priced spinning wheel on Kijiji and frustrations with my current drop spindle I picked up a new spindle at Romni Wools. A shiny new lacquered 3.0 oz Ashford top whorl drop spindle.

My biggest complaint with my Ashford Student spindle was that the yarn wouldn't stay put in the hook. It would come off the bottom part of the shaft and I'd have no tension while spinning. Two little notches in the whorl solved that problem!

That and well, it looks a lot nicer. :)

I spun some organic mohair/merino roving on it. The spindle doesn't even seem that full even with 3.5 oz of roving on it. And I'm sure if I had wound it better I'd get more. The yarn seems to be spun a bit better too. I'm was able to spin and draft at the same time, rather then park and drafting (spinning the spindle, stopping it, then letting the accumulated twist travel up the yarn instead of doing it pretty much simultaneously)

I'm going to ply this with some faux cashmere for a 2 ply yarn. I have some spun up, but I'm going to transfer what I have done to my new spindle and spin it on that.

It's snowing a ton outside right now. I'm so glad that I don't have to go into the salon to work this week. (I'm so glad I can work from home now!) Shaggy hasn't come home yet and I hope this snow doesn't make it hard for him to get home. I think I'm going to make some muffins tonight, it's a bit chilly in here (the living room have huge windows, so the air in front of them gets cold easily). The oven will warm the place up quite a bit. I baked a "chick'n" burger with rice "cheese" for lunch and the place stayed pretty toasty for a few hours. Usually it's quite warm in here, but our heaters just can't keep up with the cold and the wind. The rooms with smaller windows seem to be fairing much better. The pigs must be so glad to be in the den.

Shaggy and I spent the weekend in Waterloo attending our niece's birthday party. The snow didn't really help that either. :P We went laser tagging and I did ok (I placed third) I didn't feel very well, so that didn't help things along. We accidentally got her the same gift as her parents so we just ended up giving her $40 and some fun girly hair stuff. And now I have a copy of Pokemon Battle Revolution (copy of said game was opened before we knew so it's not like we could return it. Besides I was kinda wanted a copy myself.)

And people wonder why I tend to stick to gift cards. You can never have too many of those!

More fresh yarn

Ok, so I kinda sorta stayed up past midnight making yarn last night. :P But hey, who doesn't want to wake up to a nice yarntini?

The two skeins ended up making 54 yards. Not enough to make much of anything. :( But I think I'll have just enough to make a bag for one of my smaller tarot decks. What better to wrap your divination tools in then something you worked on for hours? Forget sleeping with your cards under your pillow, think of how much energy, focus and cursing went into the yarn and the resulting knitting.

And now more shots of the yarn, just because I can. :P

Now I just have to wait for it to dry a bit more so I can wind it into balls and start knitting with it. :)

Hopefully my next yarn looks better. I want to make thinner yarn and ply it so it looks a bit more like well, yarn. The vast majority of yarn is plied, and plied yarn is supposed to be a lot easier to work with.

That and I like the idea of dual coloured yarn. :)

Fresh Yarn

I finished a small bit of yarn today. The roving came in 2 oz braids so I'm dividing the yarn into balls that way. 2 oz doesn't quite fill up the spindle, but it comes close. I figured I'd rather process two equal halves then one really big half and one small half.

I've spun other bits of roving before, but they end result really didn't look like yarn. And I really didn't want to post pictures of it. I realized how much I missed it. I'm going to get a mirror for the living room, so that I can practice in a larger space. Having the stereo handy will be nice too. It's sucks trying to belly dance with an iPod.

I finished LocoRoco! All 5 worlds. I'm so happy. I never beat video games! I feel like I have to recap everything, but this time there seems to be so little to re-cap. Things have kind of been ho-hum and dreary. My in-laws have finally moved on, and anyone who knows me well, knows I have a hard time living with others. I'm don't like people disturbing my processes and I've grown quite fond of the ivory tower I've built for myself. It's not that I dislike my in-laws or that they are hard people to live with. On the contrary. I feel that I am a hard person to live with, and end up feeling bad for it the whole time.

But that has passed, and "normal" life is taking over, what ever that may be. :)

My birthday was last week and Shaggy got me an awesome gift! A PSP slim. I'm so happy with it. I've been spend way too much time enjoying LocoRoco. But it's so fun and so relaxing. Almost in a mantraish sort of way. "Stop stressing out and just roll this little ball around!" I'm already over half way done. And I'm really really bad at finishing video games.

Speaking of unfinished video games, I've been a Final Fantasy fan for sometime now. But I've never actually finished a game. I love the story lines and the characters but I tend to jump around and want to play the latest greatest thing. But I think I finally have a reason to sit down and actually finish FFVII (the first FF game I bought):

They made a FFVII prequel!

That's like the next best thing to remaking FFVII itself (which I hope they do. It's the series 20th anniversary. They re-released I, II, and Tactics, so there's still hope!)

I came late to the FFVII scene. It was so cool looking in Grade 9 but when I finally got a copy of it myself in college the graphics were soooo dated that it's almost hard to play. I actually prefer sprites to the first 3d rendered images.

But I know I'm going to want to play the new one, so I'll hunker down and work through the old one. FFVII is a great game with a great story. So I think I'll hook up the PS2 today (Shaggy hasn't gotten around to doing that. He's been too busy with the Wii & Guild Wars) take advantage of the fact that since Shaggy is so obsessed with Guild Wars that I'll have the TV to myself for a bit and finally play through one of the great games of gaming history.

See I told you people my life is boring. I'm blogging about playing a PS One game in 2008. :P

Wandering, with yarn!

Time passes, seasons change and I've wandered back again. What have I been up to you ask?

Shaggy and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary on July 31. Time flies, eh? I didn't even have this blog then! Annnywho, for his gift, Shaggy wanted to go the opening gala of Just For Laughs: Toronto. Though the seats were super high and we could only see half the stage we had a good time. They recorded a segment with Jay Leno during the show!

I got a new cell phone with Virgin Mobile for my gift. No more expensive Bell Canada plan! Woot! And I have a much cooler phone.

I've been working on my crochet and knitting skills. I have a couple works in progress. I'm working on a scarf (knit), a shrug (knit), a Rectangle Granny Square Blanket to layer on top of my yoga mat (crochet) and a top secret project ;) And you all wonder why I have no time to blog. I just finished an awesome Domo-kun cozy for my new phone. Once I grab some batteries or a Bluetooth adapter for my computer I'll post a picture.

I've been doing some pen & paper journaling as of late. As much as I like writing on this blog sometimes it's nice to doodle on paper too. Sometimes I just have to let it all out and a nice crisp blank book is so good for that. Besides It's fun to paste scraps of paper in, like the receipt showing that I purchased Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows at 12:04 AM on July 21 . :)

Finished reading HP&TDH to Shaggy last weekend. I swear that webcams are more cruel then mirrors! Even in a small picture every single blemish is magnified by 100%! I'll just hide behind my pretty hair.

In other quite vain news, my gut has shrunk to the point that I can wear a t-shirt that doesn't quite cover my entire midriff without freaking out and pulling my shirt down. The little tiny bit of tummy you see when I wear this shirt is no longer bulging anymore. Yeah for bellydance! It's slowly vanquishing my "Buddha Belly"! Though I still get rolls when I sit down. :( But it's getting there, slowly but surely.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://beautiful.sorceressandswordsman.com/2007/07/pink-pink-pink.html' title='Pink! A really really busy time. I keep telling myself I should sit down and write but I tend to feel so tired at the end of the day that I never write. Now I'm here and it's almost midnight and I really felt like I should update ya'll on what's been up.

The biggest change is that I moved. We finally found a bigger place in a much less freaky building. Now Shaggy and I live in Etobicoke, or as I call it: The edge of civilization. It's a nice enough apartment and I'm working hard on fixing it up. (It was all cream >.< I *hate* cream on walls!)

But unfortunatly for me, it's far away from everything. There are no book stores, cafes or yarn stores in walking distance. :/ I have to bike or take the bus to get anywhere except the grocery store. Oh and we have a really crappy Shoppers. After some time I found a park, but it's nothing like High Park.

The next change is that my step father-in-law moved in. The economy is really sucky back home and the poor guy needed a job ASAP. So right after we moved in we had to re-arrange everything 0.o So the pigs got evicted from our shiny new computer/pet room and now I get regular visits from my mother-in-law. It's like living in an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. Only my in-laws aren't nearly as scary. My biggest problem thus far is my MIL's compulsion for re-arranging stuff around here, and I can deal with that.

And the least ground breaking, but very exciting change is that I have completed my first commercial web site! I'm the in house designer at work and for months I have been toiling over this site, doing countless revisions and little tweaks. I am happy to announce the Hair Sprung Website is up and running @ http://hairsprung.net! (Disclaimer: The views here at BLM are not necessarily the views of Hair Sprung and the views of Hair Sprung are not necessarily the views of BLM. ) I am very happy with it. Hair Sprung is an awesome place to work for! :)

I also adopted a very cute gerbil. When Ichigo-chan decides to stay still for more then 1 second I'll get a picture for you guys. Needless to say, she is the most adorable gerbil ever. :)

Well that's it for tonight. I hope to be up and posting more often now. But hey, I'm a wanderer, it's not like I've gone long without posting before. You all know the drill by now.

Small things amuse small minds

It always amazes me how I fall for small little web gadgets, avatars banners and such. This blog could even constitute as a bigger version of such diversions.

I have added a few blinkies to the bottom of the side bar. My favourite thus far has to be:

I' m not really a web master, I just play on on the internet.
But hey I got to play with the quote feature on blogger. I loved my class. The teacher was super friendly and gave me lots of feedback, which I really need. One of the reasons I never went back to yoga class was the utter lack of any feed back. The studio was small, but nice. Clean and well decorated with a cute little change room. (it's too cold here to walk about in work out clothes)

She said she was confident that with time belly dance would help me lose what I call "The Buddha Belly". I really want to tone up my core, which is the last thing left of my post accident pudge. She also said it would help my posture (which is terrible!) and help me feel more graceful.

So now I'm on the "New Hobby Shopping Spree" And what shopping it is with all the pretty music and clothes. :) I bought a CD off of iTunes ($8 and change is a steal for a CD. I pay $7 - 8 for used CDs) and I ordered a pretty hip belt off of eBay. Shaggy thought it was really pretty too.

I'd like to get a full length mirror and a book soon, but I want to see if I can find dance move descriptions online. I really just need a refresher between classes and I'd really like to practice at home.
'Cause we all know, in anything, practice makes perfect. :)

Google has swallowed up this blog

Apparently using the old Blogger is no longer a choice. Some how someone came up with the bright idea to do a panel on Athiesm without actually inviting an Athiest. I'm sure it can't be for lack of people wanting to participate. There are plenty of Athiests who are strong debaters. I'm sure they could have easily gotten Richard Dawkins or someone similar to happily debate on a panel. Not sure if it was laziness on the part of CNN or just sheer one sided reporting.

One thing's for sure though, CNN really dropped the ball on what could have been a wonderful enlightning report.

Happy Imbolc

I hope everyone had a Happy Imbolc. Or at least a Happy Groundhogs Day. :) I took a walk in High Park but ended up falling down and agrivating my back injury a bit. Hopefully with a little bit of rest and back rub it will be as good as it was. Maybe not quite good as new. :P

I am considering a walking stick for my High Park excursions, but I don't want to look like an old person with a cane. (Not that I have anything against old people needing canes, but a 23 year old with a cane is just silly unless they truely need it) I'm still thinking it over.

We went to Swiss Chalet for dinner and had an awesome slice of cheese cake. :)

I've been totally obsessed with Animal Crossing. I have both the DS and Game Cube versions, but I'm going to concentrate on the Game Cube version first. I just find it more comfortable to play on a larger TV then on a tiny DS screen.

Covenspace

Though I didn't jump on the MySpace band wagon (but my guinea pigs certainly did)I found a smaller more cozy version called Coven Space where pagans of all walks can meet and have their own little space on the net.

It looked fun.
